I have Windows 7 with a creative x-fi card and I have experienced the loss
of sound problem on a number of occasions. There does not seem to be any
pattern to this. I am fortunate enough to have a hardware synthesizer
however, so when this does happen I don't lose speech but I imagine it would
be quite frustrating if I was depending on my soundcard to hear Window-Eyes.
Before I upgraded to Windows 7 I was running vista on this same system with
no sound issues at all. Go figure.

On my machine I've had no sound issues. So it could be specific sound cards.
