In my case the sound card is a SoundBlaster Audigy.

This is definitely a windows or driver problem.  I have the same issue 
with realtech high definition audio on win7 32-bit.  I never had any 
trouble with vista either.  I dug out my dec express and just switch to 
it when my sound goes away.  The trouble with this problem is that it 
doesn't happen often enough to keep ms tech support interested.
