Hmmm, I've got Vista Home Premium here and all I've got in the Sounds
dialogue box is Playback Recording, and Sounds. None of them have a
Communications page anywhere. Am I looking in the wrong place?

All,
Please do the following to fix any sound issues relating to Skype. This
is on Windows Vista and above.
1. Open the Sound multipage dialogue box.
2. Ctrl-tab to the communications page.
3. In the group of radio buttons, select, "do nothing".
4. Click ok.
What this does is prevent programs that communicate via audio, such as
Skype, from adjusting audio output from other programs, including screen
readers using software speech, Window-Eyes included.

I do not currently have a microphone for this computer. It's on the
Christmas list. smile Anyway, earlier this summer I tried using the
official Skype client on a Windows 7 machine, and noticed that all other
sounds were turned down to such a level that they could barely be heard
and not understood. As soon as I'm able to get a microphone for this
machine, I intend to download GWSkype, so I'm very interested in the
rest of this conversation and any fixes.

Chris,
Thanks for the feedback. One thing we have seen is that when a Skype
call is active, Windows Vista and above will automatically turn down
other Windows-related audio, including screen readers. If you go to
the Sounds applet in the control panel and choose Communications, what
do you see for the selection in the radio button group?

Sorry to reply to my own message, but I have more information on the
bug
outlined below.
It appears to not be a SAPI issue at all, because when I received a
couple of calls using it with Window-Eyes, I couldn't get audio output
either. I turned off the speech settings with no joy. I then ran the
free screen reader and all is well again.
Once again, I am not expecting this to be right first time, but for
starters it works very well. I do however feel that the more bugs we
report, the better. Also to the GW Micro community, I have spread the
word about your program.
Once again, thanks for the Christmas present. It is greatly
appreciated.

I would like to thank GW Micro for putting us Skype users out of our
misery by making an alternative, fully accessible interface to
Skype. It
was very thoughtful of you and it must have taken you lots of time
and
development into the project. It is running well, however I have a
suggestion. I realize this is 1.0 so I understand if this would take
time to implement.
Could you perhaps allow GW Skype to use the screen reader's own API,
and
not just SAPI 5. I'm thinking what if you want to use the free or
competetive screen reader to use GWSkype instead of Window-Eyes. The
other reason I am suggesting this is I think I found a bug in the
SAPI
support. Whenever I try to make and receive a call, SAPI blocks all
audio output to the call and, in one scenario, actually caused the
program to crash. I have for now turned off all speech related
events in
the speech tab of options. This of course means I will have no idea
who
has signed in and out, but at least I get the sounds and will be
aware
of any other events, like incoming calls or chats.
Thank you very much for taking this into consideration. I would like
to
wish all the staff at GW Micro a very merry Christmas and a happy New
Year.
