Another suggestion for those who cannot afford to move to a newer OS, would 
be to avoid running as administrator if your computer will be exposed to the 
Internet.  This is a good idea in general but especially if you will be 
sticking with XP.

Microsoft security essentials will be maintained and updated for windows xp for 
another year. Moreover, there will be a range of other antivirus utilities 
available to xp users. There's still a large constituency of people who use xp 
and for one reason or another will not  be able to upgrade to windows 7 or 8 
just yet.
