Why wait until the deadline to look for security loopholes? Why not seek them out now? Microsoft is hardly likely to release any new patches between now and April 9th. Fact is, that there are many people who simply cannot afford the cost of new hardware with Windows 8.1 and the responsible thing in these forums would be to look for ways of protecting them from the risks, rather than effectively putting the fear of God into them for being poor.
For my part the migration to Linux is slowly but steadily becoming a happy reality. I have no axe to grind with either Microsoft or GW Micro, but in my current financial circs I am unable to splash out on that new laptop or mini tower.
Sincerely, Matthew
p.s. I am conscious that the discussion is slowly moving outside the scope of this list and for that I do apologise; however, i feel it right and necessary to voice my unease at the way the whole XP switch-off lark is being advertised, shades of the y2k virus.

It's not so much that they've plugged "all security holes" with the latest versions of Windows, so much as that they won't be plugging newly discovered vulnerabilities in Windows XP in not very long from now. And you can bet that within hours of the Windows XP deadline, security vulnerabilities *will* be found and exploited. While it's also true that vulnerabilities will be found with Windows Vista and later, those will be more likely to be fixed, and fixed soon, since the likelihood that XP will get any attention is pretty close to zero after April 8th. Be very sure that there will be unscrupulous peoplee trolling for XP systems after Microsoft stops supporting them, and be also assured that those systems will get compromised in one way or another, whether as unwilling participants in a bot net, or who knows what.

So, no, it really isn't the current state of XP that anyone's worried about. It's the future prospect, even likelihood, of trouble.
