Alex, Using the scroll keys takes you through the list of messages. To see the sender date and subject, you have to Tab. On your other question, if you press Enter on a message, it goes into read all mode. That's fine if you want to hear the whole message, but if you want to interact with the text at all, you have to then do a chord-z to exit read all mode, before you can do anything in the message body.
