Courtney, I am trying to recall my days at UB working with the AT. The recovery from arthroscopic surgery is much quicker due to the less invasive approach (3 small holes) vs. large incisions through skin/muscle/capsule. The meniscus is a tough heal due to the limited vasculature, which limits the amount of blood reaching the area and therefore aiding in healing. If there is a serious tear, in which case you may be experiencing some joint locking, surgery may be the only way to fix it. The locking is due to the meniscus flap getting caught in the joint space. Hopefully there is no other damage to the surrounding ligaments.
However, I would say the good news is that I believe cycling would be used as a method of recovery to due the low impact nature of the exercise. Though probably not the intensity you are used it. I don't believe it would take long to start the recovery process once the majority of the swelling is down after the procedure. In fact, the sooner you can start may help, but you need to ensure you don't push it too much and also include therapy to help keep swelling down in the area. The swelling occurs initially to protect the damaged area, but you need to remove this to restore joint ROM and clean out the damaged tissue so you can heal faster. Not sure how long this may take for recovery, put probably looking at a few weeks to a few months, depending on the extent of the injury. This is just my 2 cents from my days long ago. I defer to the experts for a more thorough explanation and plan for repair and recovery.
