Courtney, I just had knee surgery on both knees for menisus tears March 4th
by our own Dr. Hardy Singh. My knees hurt for approximately 9 months before
I finally had surgery. It was my family doctor reading Hardy's report that
asked, "Well when did you think the knees were going to get better?? A tear
is a tear is a tear and will never heal and you need to go ahead and
schedule surgery, you're not getting any younger". So I scheduled surgery.
After about one month, I was spinning with very little resistance for about
15 min. After another week, 20 min. and within two months after surgery was
up to 30 min., little resistance. That and therapy every day, sometimes
twice a day has helped.
Two months post op, I did my first Sun. touring ride and ended up at a
moderate 13.5 avg. (and this was with a healthy Hal leading the ride that
day, just 5 of us, holding it back for me). I have now ridden for the past
6 weeks, 2-3 per week, but am just up to 17 mph avg. on my rides. The knees
are still hurting (am on my way to PT this morning) but according to Hardy,
I am in the second phase of recovery.
Hardy told me the first two months would be a rebuilding period and healing,
then another phase of approximately 2 months of strengthening and endurance.
I am in that phase now. I can still feel the pain when I push or pull too
much and have to be careful of what and how I ride. Am not sure if I am
typical in the recovery process or not. I am nearly 3 and a half months
post op and am not 100%.
Just my post op opinion on meniscus tear symptoms.

Subject: [Gyros: 15754] Torn Lateral Meniscus
Can anyone give me feedback on recovery time and off the bike time
after having arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn lateral meniscus?
I did it two weeks ago playing in a mandatory volleyball tournament at
an employee appreciation event. (Very first ball served came right to
me and that's when I hurt it.) I kept thinking if I gave it a few days
it would get better but after almost two weeks with no improvement I
went to the doctor this week. Add on a week of travel and vacation
prior to that and I've already been off the bike 3 weeks total. Not
certain when I will get this done but the sooner the better. Worst
part is that I'm signed up for BSG next weekend.
Thanks,
Courtney
