Use your microscope and have a look at your fibers under 250x to 500x magnification. Flax fibers (linen) have a somewhat bamboo looking shape. You get the bamboo like segments and when viewed in cross section there is actually a dark looking (hollow?) centre like bamboo has. Cotton fibers on the other hand is long with a gentle twisting to the fiber. In cross section cotton appears as a kidney bean shape. Cotton also has a dark centre but it is a squashed line instead of the more open looking centre of linen.

Hope that helps!
