I just finished a college level program that used "Survey of Historic Costume: A History of Western Dress" by Phyllis G. Tortora, Keith Eubank. It's current and it brushes past history and costume, combining social and political influences. As someone who was already very interested in historic costume before I took the class, I must admit, I found this book vague and well, lacking.

My favourite for teaching a class on Historic Costume would be 20,000 Years of Fashion by Francois Boucher. I like the text and I like that it is full of art that illustrates style.
