Another idea,  A friend of mine has this exact problem appliqueing Linen.

She iron's onto the wrong side of the base fabric a layer of the tear-away fabric paper that stiffens the fabric.....can't remember the name.

This reduces the gum up to the point that she doesn't have a problem any more. Then, when she's done, she just tears the paper away and all is great.
