I haven't dived into this discussion yet but I just wanted to say a few words. I don't really have an opinion as to what to do or not. Language is the main thing that explains why I very rarely participate here. As a foreigner living in Vietnam but not speaking the language it's an constant problem. I rarely even bother reading this mailing-list as I cannot understand 95% of what's being said. Even if the starting of a discussion is in english (or french but that's an event in itself when this happens) I just skim it and don't follow because I know that at some point the discussion will switch to vietnamese and it'll be the end for me. Ultimately I know I am the one "at fault" for my lack of tiếng Việt skills but I also know that tiếng Việt seem doesn't seem to compile in me so there it is for me. I'm still subscribed here (and now the 2 others en and fr as well) because even though I don't get much out of it I still don't want to be totally cut out in case something both intelligible and relevant to me comes up.
I'm not sure splitting in 3 lists is the solution, it seems very cumbersome and I can see the en and fr lists dying a quiet forgotten death rather soon. I have no solution other than continuing as usual and for me to see the light and finally "get" vietnamese (I'm jobless right now so have some time and my son should start speaking soon so I'll hop on his learning steps :P (although I hope the jobless state won't last forever...)) Now, having written all of this I certainly understand that vietnamese speakers are here at home and should speak in their own language. Gwenhael. P.S. : To those suggesting Google translate to follow vietnamese discussions I suggest you try... If you cannot refer to the original vietnamese version, the machine-translated result doesn't make sense at all in 99% of the cases! Vietnamese language, pronouns in particular, need a lot of context that Google just can't follow. 2010/10/21 Ngo Trung Nhan <[email protected]> > see, non-vietnamese languages don't bother Vietnamese > and it looks like vietnamese language does bother some non-vietnamese > speaker/writer > > But we do speak 1 common language: that's Linux & FOSS, that's why > this mailing list has been existing. > > There's no reason to split up this community by creating too many > diff. mailing list just because of minority wants so. > > 2010/10/21 Phan Anh Dung <[email protected]>: > > > > > > On Thu, Oct 21, 2010 at 1:40 PM, Le Kien Truc <[email protected]> > > wrote: > >> > >> Although I don't often read emails written in English from Hanoilug but > I > >> don't really mind if there are in my email. i think we don't need to > split > >> them to another place. > >> > > +1 > > > > Google translate: > > "Mặc dù tôi không thường xuyên đọc các email viết bằng tiếng Anh từ > Hanoilug > > nhưng tôi thực sự không phiền nếu có trong email của tôi. tôi nghĩ rằng > > chúng ta không cần phải tách chúng đến một nơi khác." > > > > Google cũng không đến lỗi kém, đừng tốn thì giờ bàn luận nữa. > > > > > > -- > > Phan Anh Dũng > > R&D Department, Huesoft > > (Trung tâm Công nghệ Thông tin Thừa Thiên Huế) > > > > _______________________________________________ > > POST RULES : http://wiki.hanoilug.org/hanoilug:mailing_list_guidelines > > _______________________________________________ > > HanoiLUG mailing lists: http://lists.hanoilug.org/ > > HanoiLUG wiki: http://wiki.hanoilug.org/ > > HanoiLUG blog: http://blog.hanoilug.org/ > > > _______________________________________________ > POST RULES : http://wiki.hanoilug.org/hanoilug:mailing_list_guidelines > _______________________________________________ > HanoiLUG mailing lists: http://lists.hanoilug.org/ > HanoiLUG wiki: http://wiki.hanoilug.org/ > HanoiLUG blog: http://blog.hanoilug.org/ >
