Except that I've seen drives die due to heat, so while the study was interesting, it is hardly the be-all and end-all. (Sort of like the "eat this food and beat cancer!" "No wait, don't eat THAT, eat THIS!" studies that we see out of the nutrition industry all the time.)
While it isn't critical to keep hard drives super cool, you don't want them to run hot (which appears to be 55C and over) for long periods of time. As the temp goes up, the length of time that is safe goes down.
