VLC is good but Install XP codec pack http://www.xpcodecpack.com/ and you will pretty much have everything covered...
and you can use any media player.

I think you're absolutely right. I'm not sure to be happy about it or what. I guess it leaves a window for other vendors to get a slice...but that sure makes WMP look whimpy.
