1) Dual displays..
I have two Samsung 204B...these run at 1600 x 1200. However, their
color is quite different, to the point of distracting. I've tried
and tried but they can't be made (so far) to match up. Anyone else
experience this kind of thing?
Yes. I have often seen different display(s) of the same screen do
this; even though they are the same m/n. Nature of the beast, I
fear. And, mostly why I wait a long time to do any major update
because I know that I will NOT SEE what I did before after I turn all
the NEW STUFF on.
Well, if you ask me, two monitors of the same m/n should be expected to
look very similar out-of-the box assuming they have the same default
settings. If not, then that suggests some shoddy workmanship or use of
subpart parts. I guess I now know what I'm dealing with, huh?
2) XFX Geforce 8800 GTS XXX 640 MB
When I put this card on the two displays mentioned , both on the DVI
input, one of them starts blinking on and off at intermittent
intervals. I tried switching the monitors but that didn't
matter....the same monitor blinks on and off. This didn't happen at
all when driving it with the ATI9800 Pro. Seems like the switch
brought it on....Is it the card or the monitor (which, was working
fine prior to the switch).
Can not be much help here. You are now so far above me in video
power, I'll leave technical comments to those in your new sphere of
video. There has been so much change in video cards in the last 3
years that I am completely "stupid" to comment.
Yeah, I have a video card whose name has XXX in it. It's triple X for
video power. Go me! :)
3) Viewsonic & Samsung
To further test the problem in 2, I put a low end Viewsonic on there
in place of the monitor that was acting flaky. It runs at 1440 x
920. So far (just made the switch this morning) it doesn't show the
blinking problem. Still, the displays look quite different, even
after trying to use nVidia's software to adjust the displays. Also
the resolution difference (1440 x 920 vs. 1600 x 1200) is
distracting, at best.
I have lusted after a Samsung flat screen ever since FORC5 got his. I
do use Viewsonic ATM. But, one day, I will (might) go Samsung (who I
believe has the best screen, if you can drive it properly!).....That
parenthetical may be a critical thing. I just do not know any
longer. The difference between WS and NormalPC view creates a lot of
noise at this address......... :)
4) WS vs 4:3
These WS LCDs seem to offer less vertical real estate with increased
horizontal space. However, two 4:3s running at 1600 x 1200 offer way
more horizontal space than even the largest WS that is affordable.
Do any of you prefer dual 4:3s vs either dual WS or just a big WS?
I'm just wondering what's the best way to go if I end up buying a new
LCD to deal with the problems mentioned above.
I fear that this is true in a WS display screen. I do believe that WS
screens are fabricated to do (or be ready to do) HDTV-like video
projection. Could be wrong, but from the comments I read here, it
seems to be a reasonable conclusion. Not an answer I know, JMO. If
you intent is HDTV go WS for a display. If your intent is
just-plain-PC go standard 4:3 LCD screens. The ability to run dual
(or more) screens off the single video card are not screen dependent
from what I read from this List's Screen Mavens. Still reading and
learning......
Best,
Duncan
Seems to be that if WS displays don't do with WS TVs do, let you run in
some kind of progressive mode, there is not point to them. All you're
doing is stretching the image horizontally or shrinking it vertically.
What's the point? Now, some of them are usable as TVs too, so in that
case I can see WS, because you can connect a PC, and HDTV, and a DVD
player to them. I have one like that in my workout room that I use only
as a TV. If the monitor doesn't have TV, HDTV, or DVD input, it might as
well me just a nearly square monitor as far as I'm concerned. But
nowadays you have to "hunt" for a 4:3. WSs are everywhere for no
apparent useful reason, AFAICT.
