Anthony,
Thanks for the link. I will study. The link is an interesting read. Impressed that someone could/would focus so deeply into what I consider to be a commodity object. Still nice to know that we still have folks willing to dig deep into specific areas.

I can still recall a long running thread here (back in the 90's) dealing with cleaning and lubing the CD tray mechanics and the rail system of the optical head. Never had the nads to open any of my units!
Best,
Duncan

I notice that amazon.com sells lens cleaners not only for CDs/DVDs, but also for Blu-rays, too.

Anyhow, if the issue is to remove dust/dirt from the lens, then most of these have the brushes in the right place, they all should pretty much do the trick.

Anthony,
That is the point of my question. Yes, I use optical drives (CD, DVD). I understand them. They have optics inside that can (should) be cleaned. The laser lens, for instance.
I clean my optical drives every 6 months (if the stupid "old" CD works!)

Turns out that my present "cleaner CD" plays fine in W2K. It plays oddly in XP.
Bummer. I know you play Vista/Win7. Fine. I do not.

Still wish to "clean" my optical drives.
Best,
Duncan

Pardon me! I thought we did. Perhaps we just replace them when they
start acting up. But then, the past 48 months have changed
much of the "optical" world.
NO. I am not talking about SSD.
I should have specified "Old Optical" maybe.

Do people still clean optical drives? I haven't done that in years.

What do we now use to clean our chosen optical drives?

I am using a very old CompUSA CD. I so know OLD!
LOL! Yes, even XP is having trouble with this CD.
It plays fine on Win2000Server!
Whatever!................ :)

Question above applies........
I need a replacement CD/DVD to continue my optical
cleaning duties.
Best,
Duncan
