Gaffer,
Sorta agree. In my case, my current CD Cleaner loads and runs a recorded cleaning routine. The code looks/reads Win95. Could even be ms-dos. The cleaner CD plays fine in W2KServer. WinXP gets picky often with it! LOL! No harm, no foul. I have owned this CD Cleaner since the late 1980's!

Yes, at the current commodity prices of current optical drives (not Blu-Ray), I have no problem just replacing a unit that is suddenly running intermittently.

I can dust. I can vacuum. I can use expensive air-filtration (like HEPA business). Still, I know the optical lens will grow dust. Yes, I have noticed that my newer opticals seem to seal the CD tray much better. I figure that if I get 4-5 years use from my opticals I may be ahead of the game.

And yes, I have modified all of my PC/Server cases to now use Swiffer Sheets. They are cheap, easy to use, and catch lots of airborne stuff. Fan speeds are not affected. I notice a lot less particulate dust in my cases now during PM cycles.
Best,
Duncan

Actually the OS doesn't matter ! When you put a disc in the drive it
automatically does a spin and seek routine. So each time you place the
cleaning CD in the drive and close the tray it will spin the disc and
clean the top lense.

Often trying to keep the top lense clean doesn't help because the
mirrors underneath the lens get contaminated with dirt, dust etc ! No
matter what you do, you can't get at those to clean them. Even if you
could, its quite probable that you would damage the microscopically
thin layers that coat them.

Realistically for the sake of $15-20 a replacement drive is a better
bet !

The real answer is not to allow the fans in the machine to suck dirty
air through the drive at all. Though modern drives are much better at
sealing the tray when its closed.
