Bryan,
Thank you for your views. They mirror my own suspicions ATM.
On the question/quibble about inline couplers, my excuse is that I did
not wish to have coils of excess cable, and, because I did not wish to
try and build custom length cables. I am now thinking about installing
a pair cable-through-the-wall tubes. This will shorten the cable between
the 2 switches, and, re-route the cable between my 2d bedroom and the
1st bedroom (2d switch and router). I can/will fix the coupler issue in
the dining room (where I work) with a new pair of 20ft. cables (pebcak
reading of the tape measure!).
On the whole, I agree about couplers. I'm just disappointed by the
current quality of these items. I have 3 old ones I bought back in the
CAT5 days. They are solid, well built and have never caused problems. A
coupler I bought from MonoPrice several years back is labeled "CAT5E"
and it works just like my older ones.
The newest CAT6 couplers are really cheesy. Bought 6. One failed solid
after 20 minutes. A second one is now badly intermittent. Hmm? I
suppose I am still confused that now in-line couplers are rated 5, 5E,
and 6 now.
This I can fix. On the whole, very happy with the new CAT6 wiring!
Thanks,
Duncan

Can I ask a simple question w/o starting an opinion war?
Finished upgrade of internal LAN wiring to CAT6.
I run a wired GBit over copper LAN.
Do see visual difference. Fine. Internal LAN is complete.
Only took too many years!
Question: I understand that CAT6 has higher frequency margin
than CAT 5E. Correct?
Usually rated for higher Mhz yes, higher the Mhz the tighter the twists afaik.
Question: I understand that CAT6 has better internal cable-pair
shielding than CAT5E....which has something to do with less
cross-talk corruption of data, or, 'interference.' Correct?
It has more twists, and yes.
LAN is working solid ATM. No complaints.
I do so have a grumble with the cheesy "CAT6 In-Line couplers" I
got from MonoPrice! 1 failed solid after 20 minutes. Another is now
strangely intermittent*. RMA for ~$4 is not likely. Yes, the couplers
were made in China.
*this I can fix with a pair of longer cables, on-order, because I did
not read the tape measure properly and assign the normal fudge
factor! My bad totally.
Meh couplers kinda suck, run a complete cable if you can. 300 Meters is max
length, you will see issues around that distance
depending on the signal str and quality of the cable.
