Yeah, I was wondering about this.
As to hp assertion that the surge suppressor is an issue, there could be merritt to this because on power up there is a huge current draw that a surge strip may perceive as a surge and therefore clamp which *may* have an effect.
I checked with Tripplite and APC and both of them recommend surge protectors for laser printers, but not UPSes, which they say could fail to provide enough power. Of course, it's in their interest to sell surge protectors. :)
