I'm actually going to agree with Anthony here. Apple is one computer vendor out
of money. They are one operating system vendor out of many. They are one
cellphone vendor out of many. There is absolutely no possible definition of
"monopoly" for which Apple has a monopoly on computers, cellphones, or
operating systems.

One could easily argue that on the iOS platform, Apple has a monopoly on
selling applications. And that would be true (disregarding of course web apps,
which are largely irrelevant).

People buy Apple products because they like them. You can argue it's because
those people are dumb prius driving sheeple, or that evil steve jobs
brainwashed people into buying crap. I can argue that it's because there are
many advantages to the Apple software platforms, that they offer great
technical support, and that the products are physically well-designed. The true
answer could even be a combination of all the above! But when it comes right
down to it, every time somebody buys an Apple laptop, an iMac, an iPhone, or an
iPad, it's NOT because of lack choices. There are dozens of competing computer
vendors, cell phone vendors, tablet vendors, etc. Some of them -- e.g., Samsung
-- even go out of the way of copying Apple products as closely as they can
(what does that tell you?).
