Hi: As National Convention Co-Chair, I can add another reason that the "minhag" has been to have the meeting in mid to late June -- the ALA convention. One primary goal is to NOT overlap with ALA, and so we look at those dates first. To my knowledge, it was never to accommodate SSC librarians, of whom many are DAY SCHOOL LIBRARIANS, and thus, it interferes with their schedules.
We have had many discussions over the years about changing the date, because of the day school librarians, because of Father's Day (Phil, I, as a MOTHER, resent being away from my family on Father's Day as well! And, by the way, it's always on my birthday). We would mention December -- there were objections. We would mention the middle of the fall (after the yomim tovim) -- no, can't do it in the middle of school. We would mention, as Fred says, later in the summer -- no, it interrupts family vacations. Frankly, we, as an organization want to have as many people come to conventions as possible, so if anyone has a good idea and/or wants to hold a mini-referendum (not on HaSafran -- Yossi would plotz) on the dates, I'm all for it.
