Definitely. Convert them. Tough, long, hard job but somebody has to do
it. Jewish Educational Videos/DVDs waffle on and On and ON in
un-subtitled foreign languges like English (....exotic but mega-useless
if you live in Spain...) and are invariably in DVD-Region 1 or
VHS-NTSC formats (...exotic but, once again, mega-useless if you live
in... ummmm.... Spain...).
Filmstrips on the other hand are a short series of very well-thought-out
organized images that tell the story, get the job done. Filmstrips/slide
sets are living proof that less is more and that a picture is worth a
1000words. Also with Videos/DVDs the audience sits there like mashed
potatoes and pasively listens to while others actively talk over the
sound track or send text-messages. With filmstrips, talking and
commenting over the image is actively encouraged.
If the filmstrips are 30-40 years out-of-date, who cares? They are now
"vintage" and you can say stuff like: Lookee there! Not a single person
has an electronic leash cell phone. NObody in these photos has ever
heard of Laura Croft or Halo, and one or two of them might be carrying a
slide rule.
The colour ones are a bit tricky. Sometimes they can not be rescued and
get tossed. But those that show promise, I convert to black and white
and then play with that.
Just save them?
No no no no no. If any of you still have strips that you want to unload,
don't think twice. Dump them in a shoe box and mail those little puppies
over to ME. Stick the booklettes in an all-purpose envelope so that I'm
not tempted to make stuff up. I'll pay the postage.
And since we're on the subject, a short stack of Ralph's/Safeway
free-bee, give-away, 5773 CALENDARS would be fab-o. Just add them to the
postage bill.
