MODIS Sea Surface Temperature images are probably HDF4 files if you downloaded from http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov/data/dataprod/dataproducts.php?MOD_NUMBER=28. Please check if HDFView you are using has HDF4 enabled ("4' icon near the "Help" button of the main window should be highlighted, click on it to see which HDF4 version is used)).
