What's a "Pango hebrew keyboard"? How do you activate it? I just want
to make sure I know what you refer to.

Oh, that's a standard Xkb mapping. That's exactly the standard way of mapping the keyboard that I'm talking about. OpenOffice could get the IME language from this one very easily.

IIRC, Pango doesn't have any way to enter Hebrew text except by:
1. Loading a Hebrew keyboard mapping (via xkb or X core protocol
facilities),
2. Entering Unicode characters directly (ALT-number or similar key
combo),
3. Using a 3rd-party "virtual keyboard" application, like GNOME
Onscreen Keyboard and likes.

I use http://www.pango.org/hebrew.xkb and nothing else special - works
fine.

Yep, that's option (1).
