That's what we do, setting up site monitoring is part of my normal
routine so I have something checking the site every 5 mins including
staging.

A couple free options:

http://www.uptimerobot.com/

And when you're ready for the big time:
http://pingdom.com/

(though I'll gladly hi-jack this thread if someone has better
suggestions...)
