I tried a bunch of new stuff out on the Playa this year
1. Space Age Polimer Paint(Ceramic Paint) - It was great till I tried
to use tape on it. It kept peeling off. I found out this after
painting the roof entirely so I had to flip the roof inside out. I
used the Heavy Duty paper tape to join everything before painting and
there was some minor bubbling where I painted. The roof was in fairly
good shape even with all the changes.
2. All Triangle roof - Made set up easier but I feel that you lose
some integrity structurally and that could be bad(this is for a 6'
Stretch)
3. Heavy Duty Paper Tape - LOVED it - since you need to tape and tape
and tape - Heavy Duty Paper tape is great for edging and is cheaper
than most other things. It does require water to activate it and may
get you a bit sticky. Who doesn't love sticky and water though.
4. I did not do the better way to do guidelines. I did try using
Straps that ratchet and saw someone who had notched their tape anchor
plastic holds. That is the way I will go next year. Fast better
easier. now to figure out how to get rebar in the ground faster with
less effort
5. No Airlock as the 6' Stretch was not quite big enough for it
6. We also didn't have room for any cooling so we were up by 9
because of the thermal properties of the cardboard. Next year AC if
we build this small. If we build larger then we could go with a swamp
cooler. We noticed that the last night was much colder and I think it
was because there were a lot less structures around us and less flames
going off. So having the cardbard insulated with mylar or something
will probably help.
7. Break down was easier as the bidirectional tape peeled off the
cardboard when we pulled. It was on tight all week so no worries with
that.
8. Didn't do fancy guide lines. Used Tie Downs on one of the points
instead of rope and that was great. Will try to do all of them that
way in the future. I will need to notch the tape to do it with the
hooks.
9. Next year I think I am going large again. I will do a 12 foot
with 6 foot walls making it a 10 foot. I will start working out the
kinks on the paint and see what else I can do to make it work with
Cardboard.
10. Since I didn't have any insulation and I didn't paint everything
I didn't take measurements. I did take lots of pictures and hope to
have a picture log soon of the Honeycomb Hexayurt 6' stretch with 6
foot walls experiment some time soon.
