I think the foil tape is important. Last year I had to remove the old bi-filament because it had deteriorated from the sun. While removing the tape (carefully with a heat gun) I tore the foil on the panels. Big repair job. This year I have a new Mark ll hexayurt and cover all bi-filament with foil. I expect to use the same (folding Hexayurt) for many years with few or no repairs. One year of Bi-Filament tape is ok if you plan on throwing the the hexayurt away.
