Anytime the sound isn't clean and smooth, it's time to change the cotton. 
Changing the cotton may not solve the problem, but it's always your first stop
on the journey of finding your way to the pure sound.  Rosin adjustment comes
right behind.  The vast majority of sound problems are solved with cotton and
rosin.

But that's not a very specific answer, is it?  But it can't be - I've played
for a few days straight without changing cotton. Sometimes it's just a few
minutes and you say, "nope, try that again."  The more you practice, the less
often this happens, but I've seen top players replace their cotton 3 times in
a row rather than playing around with bad cotton and trying to make it work.
