Don't forget about tightening the cotton
Tight cotton is essential

You need to do this very regularly when playing
Most times this will make a big improvement in the sound
Only when tightening doesn't help should you re-cotton

Look at my cottoning tips at

Anytime the sound isn't clean and smooth, it's time to change the cotton.
Changing the cotton may not solve the problem, but it's always your first
stop
on the journey of finding your way to the pure sound. Rosin adjustment
comes
right behind. The vast majority of sound problems are solved with cotton
and
rosin.

But that's not a very specific answer, is it? But it can't be - I've played
for a few days straight without changing cotton. Sometimes it's just a few
minutes and you say, "nope, try that again." The more you practice, the
less
often this happens, but I've seen top players replace their cotton 3 times
in
a row rather than playing around with bad cotton and trying to make it work.
