Maybe, there is such an instrument, a keyless hurdy gurdy, there is a photograph of one being played by Bjorn Tollin on the inside cover of the first Hedningarna CD, the stings are beaten with a stick,

Yes, the instrument they are playing is likely related to either the tambourin, also called the tambour a cordes, tambour des Basques, tunn tunn, Chicotén; there is also the Hungarian Utögardon (sp?) which is beaten.

the instrument played by Björn Tollin at Hedningarna is not rooted in or derivated from the traditional instruments mentioned above, its just coincidence that they match: When I asked Totte Mattsson if there is a relation to thouse instruments he told me no, its just that the band experimented a lot with getting unusual sounds from their instruments and also changed their instruments designs to get mor new sounds. One of this experimental instruments is the gurdy in question, another one is the stringed percussion instrument now used by the drummer of Totte Mattssons band Boot.
