Hello, I'm not on the development team. I just want to share my opinions.
First of all almost all open source projects have a user mailing list. A mailing list is easy to subscribe/unsubscribe etc. > If a user posts a question of a forum, then they only have to see > responses to their question. In a user mailing list, they will get > innundated by the 20-100 other user mailing list emails a day until they > unsubscribe. Yes. This way you can see other people's questions/problems too. Without asking a single question you can learn a lot of things. I'm a very new Hibernate user, I haven't found enough time to dig in and it's been a month or so since I joined the forum. Thus, *I* don't know what people talk about it yet. I *have to* go to the forum to see them. If it was a mailing list all would be in my inbox. > Also, while it's possible to provide web-history of a mailing list, it's > not as web-centric as a forum. Mailing list emails do not contain a > link to the web posting (you have to search and find it on your own), > while obviously the forum posting and the latter notifications link to > the web-thread. I don't think this is an issue for not having a user mailing list. Another reason that mailing lists are better is people who use dial-up connection. You can get all posts in a few minutes and disconnect, later you can use any MUA to read the messages offline. Also Gavin's comments on "complete history" and "properly threaded" messages is somewhat non-sense to me. Most e-mail programs properly thread mailing lists. I don't have any problem with that and I don't think people having difficulties with it. And if you want complete history on a thread don't delete messages very often. If you want to see a thread'a one year old message do a quick search on google.
