Inteas of individual maps, can be more usefull to "join" to "map channels". Example: "join Natural Selection channel, and receive all Natural Selection maps, has available and by request".
A channel can be mod based, server based, or guy-mapper based.

Well, if not the mod itself, for example, Sven Coop and Natural Selection have an option method to pay, perhaps these things would be incorporated into Steam. Or perhaps if someone makes a totally new mod that they wish to sell as a game. Or, for example, if I'm making a machinima, and I have a hi res and a low res version, the high res people pay for and the low res is free. Things like that. I'm really only speaking in a general sense.
