it always seemed to me that if there player ID's reached around 2000 the server would start acting funny(slow deterioration of performance), so we got into the habit of restarting the servers soon after 2000 Id's have been reached. Then a box restart about once a every 2 weeks.
I'm not saying this is how it should be done, but to only give you an idea of our routine.
