You do realize, however, that your servers will never ever be
cheat-free, no matter how often Valve updates VAC, right?

To a certain degree. Ive said it before and Ill say it again. Responding to
the new cheats in a timely manner will have a very positive effect in the
LACK of cheats that show up down the road. It may force cheat writers to
not make their works public which again lowers the number of overall
cheaters. Why make a cheat public if its going to be squashed within a few
days? I'd rather have 10 cheaters using a private hack than 10,000 cheaters
using a public hack.

Granted there are always going to be private hacks that will never be
caught but eliminating the public ones quickly would make all the
difference in the world I think.

Cheating
Death comes to mind. The best months I have ever had running servers was
when CD was in full swing. It's hard to believe that one unpaid guy working
in his spare time could keep this game more cheat free than the company
that made the thing.
It's also hard to believe that one unpaid guy working in his spare
time could keep his anti-cheat tech up-to-date and running the way
 a company can.

True, but he did. CD and OLO both were machines with this anticheat stuff.
It's a shame they were effectively forced out, well, CD anyway. I think OLO
just had enough of it.
