Full hlds server (about 20 clients) uses about 30% CPU (p4 3.4 ghz with HT
on) and about 12% ram[/QUOTE]

Hyper Threading should not be on for you're box.

I have run many P4 3.0 (1gig ram) Linux boxes and HT should always be off if
you're only running one instance of HLDS. HLDS is not taking advantage of
the HT.

My setup was harder on my CPU then your's is and it ran fine with the
following mods and settings, DOD 1.3, AMXX 1.76c with 78 total plugins, 18
Shrikebots, Two gore & Gib plugins running simultaneously,26 players.

Sys_ticrate 566 (sometimes I would run it at 1000 tic) no problem.
Sv_maxrate 25000
Sv_minrate 10000
Sv_maxupdaterate 50
Sv_minupdaterate 50
-pingboost 3

By using pingboost 3, I was able to get my server to run at no lower then
124 steady FPS when using the stats command through HLSW. [NOTE] Mind
you, it ran at 124 to 160 but that spike wasn't even noticeable (only a 30
frame spike/dip). Myself and all of my regulars who had a video card's
purchased within the last 6 years were running steady at 99.999 FPS and in
heavy battles it could drop to 70.

I don't know maybe I found some sort of HLDS sweetspot but the hit
registration was the best I have seen in 7 years of playing dod.

What would be an accurate way to report FPS while the system is under load?

Will P4s do EM64T? :-P

I've also noticed that the 'stats' command completely fails to report
valid FPS when the system is under load - it seems to average out the
time of the last frame over a second - if you run a windows server
where you get the banner at the top of the server output, you'll
notice it's different (and much more stable) than the stats command
when under load.
