This might very well be, but, it isn't averaged out in the load, which skyrockets.
And even though many (averaged) small things may merge and get big, it seems a little peculiar that only load quadruples, and nothing else changes at all.
It might be a longshot, but could it be an error in the centos kernel that somehow affects the load function when running under ESXi? (This is out there, but we had a case at work with Ubuntu and a specific kernel version that malfunctioned when running under ESXi)
