It occurred to me that I might have accidentally installed rake twice
- once as a package and once as a gem. 'which rake' turned up /usr/
bin/rake, which is version 0.8.1, so I ran 'apt-get remove rake', then
reran 'gem install rake'. Apparently the gem doesn't install a link /
usr/bin, so that didn't change anything. Then I remembered that I had
the same problem with rails, and had solved it by adding /var/lib/gems/
1.8/bin to my path, so I checked in that dir and found rake, and
tested it - version 0.8.7. Jumping out of root and back to my normal
user account, 'which rake' now turned up the one in the gems tree. So
that's fixed.

Next, I learned the -v option for gem and replaced rails 2.3.3 with
2.3.2.

Finally, I deleted my previous apps and built a brand new one (hobo
pod, script/generate hobo_migration). This time there was no rake
error, so that's progress. But when I ran the server, I encountered
the same hang problem. Each time I refresh, it takes 1-2 minutes to
finish loading. I tested it in IE as well, just to make sure it
wasn't Firefox being unreliable (as it is known to be).
