FYI-Been working on it for 7 hours today, finally got it all
functioning (after several OS reinstalls and all kinds of fiddling
with packages, versions, googling, and many other manifestations of
pain).  Too tired to report the whole journey.  Just happy it's done.

For what it's worth, I did notice a speed difference when I added my
workstation IP to /etc/hosts, so, good tip.
