I think the overall strategy you described is a valid one, but probably not the only valid one. And when I've had conversations with people about this in the past, there has definitely been concern about publishing _every_ IP address in a public-facing zone. But likely the answer to that is split-horizon (shudder) DNS with some out-facing information either anonymized or elided.
