I have an old (1966 Elkhart) Conn 8D that has had it's share of bell damage
over the years. Several years ago I decided to have Mark Atkinson "customize"
it rather than buy a new horn. Because there was such a dangerously thin area
on the bell, the joint decision was made to cut it, and therefore extend the
life of the bell considerably. The metal was so thin and soft, when Mark was
finished cutting it, the cross-section looked "egg-shaped" instead of a perfect
circle. It's been about nine years and the bell has many more years of life due
to the added "screw-rings" that reinforce the thin metal. There was extensive
work done-including valve replating, so of course I could not detect any kind
of negative effect.
I think extending the life of the horn/bell and travel needs would be
legitimate reasons to consider a screw-bell. Choose your technician wisely and
discuss your reasons with him/her and any possible negative effect.
