Recent messages have panned the stock profiles for the DJ 130, and I
thought I should add my 2 cents' worth.

My computer, with a Viewsonic CRT monitor runa a DJ 130, an Epson
2200, an Epson R800, and a Magicolor 2450 laser. Each prints using
the respective company-supplied profiles, and I have been generally
quite happy with each. The 2200, in particular, has proved to supply
WYSIWYG prints each time; the 3 others are not quite as good, but
generally very close.

Yesterday I was printing a customer-supplied file on the 2200, with
Premium Semi-gloss, which included 6 faces ranging in color from
red/magenta to quite yellow, together with objects supplying a rather
full range of very saturated colors. Out of curiosity, I printed the
same image on the 130 using Premium Plus satin. The result was
extremely close to the Epson print, except that the yellow face was
noticebly more saturated on the HP print. The difference was
apparent in viewing the two prints together; I may not have been
unhappy with the HP print unless I had been specifically looking for
a color-match on that face.

In the 2 years I've owned it, I've never characterized the HP's print-
to-monitor matching as less than good, and my eye for color is
probably far more experienced than most as I own a photo lab. I'm
wondering if each of my printers is a particularly good sample of its
model, or if perhaps operator error might be accounting for a few of
the complaints about the manufacturer supplied profiles. Also, there
are apparently more than a few people who want to believe that
spending more money for something insures a better result and/or that
money already spent was somehow justified.

In any case, I really want to suggest to newer readers in this space
that money and effort is much better spent first in profiling one's
monitor, and that doing so may well eliminate any dissatisfaction
with the the free printer profiles.
