Thanks to everyone for all the input. I got the paper tray out, loaded a small stack of 4x6's and the printer was able to pick it up.
The tray comes out with a lost of clanking - almost sounds like breaking?!? Kind of nervous making! It may help to remove the output tray first. Open the top cover and then the output tray can be pivoted vertically and removed. This makes is easier to grasp the sides of the paper input tray and pull it to you to remove it from the printer.
