Pam for your information, when I print onto A4 sheets, I don;t remove the tray. 
I just load 5+ sheets of paper and adjust the the tray sliders and have had no 
problems. If you haven't already tried, give this ago. It may save you the 
hassel of having to remove the tray.

  The tray comes out with a lost of clanking - almost sounds like breaking?!?

  Pam,

  The paper input tray can be removed from the printer. It may
  help to remove the output tray first. Open the top cover and
  then the output tray can be pivoted vertically and removed. This
  makes is easier to grasp the sides of the paper input tray and
  pull it to you to remove it from the printer.
