Hi Karl, There are two types of margins, the hardware margins and software margins. Hardware margins are always there. Depending on your margin setting in the driver or front panel.
Now let's take my case as an example. My images were 13cm x 15cm. Using the PS driver, you can specify a custom pagesize of 13x15cm. In this driver, there is no option to Remove Top and Bottom Blank areas. So you will have to have Inked Area set to ON, in the printer. Remember that when you create a custom pagesize, for the printer driver, this is ALWAYS portrait, even if the width is larger than the height. You might have to set the rotate option to ON, in the driver (Page Layout tab). Now, using the Windows driver, things are different. I say Windows driver b'coz this sends gl2 and or RTL data to the printer and not ps data. Anyways, in this driver, you cannot create a custom pagesize of 13x15cm. You will get a message saying that it is too small for the printer. So here you choose the next biggest size, and that is A4. Now, the white space here is NOT part of the image. It's part of the pagesize and not the image size. So this white space will be removed, if you choose the option "Remove Top/Bottom Blank Areas" in the Paper/Quality tab of the driver. Now let's take the scenario of another imagesize, say 13cm x 20cm and the extra 5cm is white space. This white space is part of the image and the printer cannot remove this white space. It takes it as part of your image and processes it and therefore prints it. In my tests on the DJ5500, the white margin before the image is included and the white margin after the image is trimmed.
