Most of what you say is correct in my experience. The always portrait function is why we rely on the inked area only function in our work flow. We have 42 inch printers. Most of what we print can be printed across that width reducing the amount of paper used. Our workflow involves customers selecting a ridiculous page size (like 42 x 60) and then orienting on the screen how they expect it exit the printer. This eliminates the need to select rotate in the driver, which is one of those check boxes we have trouble getting people to click on.
The only thing different that we experience with the DJ5500 is that it will trim white space trailing the inked area within the document with inked area only selected on the printer.
