I studied printmaking in college before getting into photography (30 years ago!), so one of the things I like about digital is that we can get back to the "classic" printmaking school, with interesting papers and properly signing the print and matting with the print showing. There is a school of photography (the classic Cirkut panoramics, for instance) where it's accepted and expected to sign the negative and print the info with every print. I am more of the "physically sign each print in the margin" frame of mind, as was done with intaglio and lithographic prints. I never cared for the "sign the backing mat" a la Ansel Adams, although I did that a few times. The other nice thing about digital is no longer needing to dry mount prints!
Either way, I think it's important for today's digital artists to find some good method of signing work. Since these prints aren't on fine art paper, can't use a pencil, so alternative methods are required. Also, in this case my boss just liked one of the photos I did on a shoot this fall and asked for a print for Christmas<g>, and "make sure you sign it." I'm not real worried about archival staying power in this case, if it all lasts 20 years that's fine, she says she wants to frame it. I just need to figure out whether to sign the print I've already made, or drop a digital sig into the image (even if it's in the margin) and reprint. No biggie, but I think all this is important discussion.
