I don't expect that it's possible for HP to release a fix to upgrade
the firmware without working firmware.
I suspect the fix, if there is one, will be to swap the flash memory,
which is socketed on the formatter board, with a corrected version of
the firmware. This would be a relatively simple fix.

It is not a manifestation of a damaged printer. HP are aware of the
problem, and will shortly put a new version of the file on their

And how are you going to run that update if your formatter, and with
it both I/O ports a not functional?
At the moment the printer behaves like it has no formatter at all
installed.
A dnj3100 without a formatter will show the same error.
Maybe HP will release some kind of emergency firmware update that can
access the formatter even when it's not recognized by the printer,
but since I know of no emergency firmware update mode available to
the public, I doubt it.
