I suppose there are two possibilities: 1) The firmware update was botched for some unknown reason
2) The firmware has a bug, as the luminous landscape thread indicates, and since so many people are experiencing the problem they pulled the bad firmware until they fix the problem.
In either case, it seems difficult or impossible to fix the problem without replacing the formatter. And since my printer is out of warranty, I may be out of luck even if HP had a bad firmware update.

HP goes all the way and a few yards further so you cannot tinker with their FW HDDS. HP-GL/2 upgrade kits earn them money, and PS licenses cost them money, so they prefer people not getting them for free. I've heard that people were able to lift preformatted HDDS from other formatters, but that might be a problem if that other formatter has already run in a machine, might cause some eerom troubles.
