Based on the "negotiated back to compatibility mode" syslog message, for
some reason the ppdev/parport kernel module will not allow software ECP
mode to be set.

What does the following command return? This tell us what pp support is
recognized by the kernel.

cat /proc/sys/dev/parport/parport0/modes

This is basic parallel port functionality and we can't reproduce this
problem in-house. What kind of PC or motherboard are you using?
