It is certainly worth a try. If you have things set up such that the web server is reporting that the files haven't changed, then what is in the database will remain unchanged. That doesn't really explain how you lost the excerpts in the first place, but it might explain why they remain missing. Rather than deleting the databases, you could run with -a or build in a different location so that you don't clobber your current files.
